Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, including the count of employment gains added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in early September, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication once the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for September that showed that prices are going up, although gradually. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
