Individuals who endured sexual abuse by Catholic clergy have expressed fresh optimism after their first encounter with Pope Leo at the Holy See.

Gemma Hickey, who leads the anti-abuse organization, stated that the pontiff's decision to engage with them so early in his papacy sent a strong message about his commitment to tackling the issue.

Worldwide Strict Approach Advocated

The group is advocating for a global zero-tolerance policy that would permanently remove any priest who confesses to or is proven of abusing a minor. This policy has been implemented in the United States.

The Pope recognized that there is "resistance in some parts of the globe" to this proposal, according to Hickey.

"We were all being realistic when we recognized that there is pushback," Hickey stated.

Inherited Challenge

The new Pope, who took the position in May, has taken on this longstanding issue that has plagued the Catholic Church for many years.

Earlier attempts to address the problem included an historic summit on child abuse within the Church and changes to canon law to explicitly criminalize abuse.

Personal Connection

For Hickey, who uses they/them pronouns, the campaign for worldwide adoption of the measure is personal. The Canadian advocate shared they were victimized by a clergy member who was later transferred between various churches.

"We trust this will set the tone for his leadership, because we aim to collaborate with him," they expressed. "Both sides share the common objective, we seek to end clergy abuse."

Historic Meeting

Seven representatives of the coalition, which represents survivors and supporters from more than 30 countries, met with the Pontiff in his Vatican office.

The meeting, originally scheduled for 20 minutes, lasted to a full hour, during which the religious leader "primarily heard to us," according to Hickey.

The Pope was described as "very understanding" when hearing the account of a female survivor abused at a church-run institution for Indigenous children in North America.

Hickey added the Pope was "compassionate" about their personal story and seemed "modest, humorous, and very down to earth."

"Survivors have long wanted a seat at the table and I didn't perceive like he was giving us lip service," Hickey commented. "I believed like he was genuine, realistic, and very open and eager to collaborate with us."

Church Regulations Reforms

The organization is hoping that changes to church regulations will facilitate the adoption of the strict approach globally.

They have spoken with specialists and gathered documents that they will submit to Pope Leo.

"He seemed engaged in looking at it," Hickey remarked.

Responsibility Highlighted

A recent Vatican-commissioned document emphasized the "necessity of a efficient process for the resignation and/or dismissal of religious officials or staff in cases of abuse or negligence."

The report also pointed out that survivors consistently emphasized the "urgent need for bishops and senior officials to be held accountable for inaction and concealment."

Path Ahead

The representative shared they told the Pope at the start of their discussion: "This is as much a risk for him to engage in a conversation as it was for us."

After the encounter, Hickey expressed hope for progress.

"We understand it's not something that's going to be resolved quickly, but at the end of the day, uniting and building a relationship and persisting to build that relationship is a step in the correct path," Hickey stated.

Hickey concluded that they shared with the pontiff: "Just because it's a dark chapter, I believe like we can alter how the story concludes - he appreciated that."
